PE & Sports Premium Funding

Sports Funding Overview

Primary PE and Sport Premium is an initiative that aims to help increase and improve the PE and sporting opportunities for children. It was first provided in the 2013/14 academic year.

PE and Sport Premium funding is provided jointly by the Department for Education, the Department for Health and Culture and the Department for Media and Sport. It has been allocated to primary school headteachers and is ring-fenced, meaning that it can only be spent on the provision of PE and sport in schools.

Here are some of the suggested uses of this funding:

  • To hire specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers during PE lessons;
  • To support and involve children by running after-school sports clubs;
  • To provide resources and training courses in PE and sport for teachers;
  • To run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in sporting events
  • To run sports activities with other schools;
  • To replace or upgrade sporting equipment;
  • To provide cover for the release of staff for PE development;
  • To invest in ways to engage a wider selection of children to participate in a broader range of activities.

As recommend by the Department for Education, we have reflected on the impact of our current provision and reviewed the previous spend. We are required to publish details of how we spent this funding as well as on the impact it has had on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment by the end of the summer term or by 31st July at the latest.
